Philadelphia’s American Jewish Museum Offers A December of Music, Film, Books, and Family Activities
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (November 28, 2023) – “Winter at The Weitzman” will bring a month of holiday programming to The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History this December.
These engaging events foster unity and understanding through the power of shared stories. The Museum welcomes people of all ages and beliefs to join in this season of reflection and celebration of the American Jewish experience.
The Museum is open every day between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The special exhibition, “The Future Will Follow the Past: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz”, which offers a visually striking commentary on pressing issues facing America today, is currently on view.
EVENTS
Sunday, December 3 | Family Day: Shine A Light
A family-oriented, multicultural afternoon of crafts, music, kid-friendly museum tours, reading, and activities all about belonging, freedom, and empowerment. In partnership with jkid4all and Eteaches365, Shine A Light will feature activities throughout three floors of the Museum building, with special experiences including self portrait drawing, candle holder making, and “I Wish to Say”, a project by Sheryl Oring, Dean of the School of Art at University of the Arts, that invites people to dictate postcards to the President, which Oring types on a manual typewriter and mails to the White House.
Tuesday, December 5 | Weitzman Book Club: Jews, Lakota, and an American Inheritance
Author Rebecca Claren will discuss her new “The Cost of Free Land: Jews, Lakota and an American Inheritance” with activist and award-winning actor and star of the FX series “Reservation Dogs” Sarah Podemski.
Saturday, December 9 | Hanukkah Concert
Celebrate Hanukkah with the high energy Klezmer band, Michael Winograd & the Honorable Mentshn. Internationally recognized clarinetist Michael Winograd and his band will be joined by the fabulous Berlin-based Yiddish songstress Sasha Lurje.
Tuesday, December 12 | Weitzman Book Club: Boston Chocolate Party
Bestselling author Rabbi Deborah Prinz explores the fascinating intersection of Jews in the chocolate trade, the American quest for independence, and Hanukkah’s freedom message, as found in her books “The Boston Chocolate Party” and “On the Chocolate Trail.” Discover unique ways to celebrate Hanukkah 2023, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of The Boston Tea Party.
Saturday, December 16 | 30th Anniversary Screening of Schindler’s List
Commemorate Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award®-winning masterpiece, “Schindler’s List,” with Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media and The Weitzman as we share this unforgettable story on the big screen, reminding us that one person can make a difference even in the darkest of times.
Monday, December 25 | Being ___ At Christmas
Annual all-day family party on Christmas day! All are welcome on a day when little else is open. Visitors of all ages can participate in immersive activities, music workshops, dance performances, crafts, and movies. The Museum’s galleries are open all day. Performances and workshops include children’s music group “Ants on a Log,” the Philly Suns Lion Dancers, the Bible Players, Movemakers Philly, and more!
