GOV. SHAPIRO TO TALK DEMOCRACY WITH MILLENNIAL AUTHORS OF HOTLY ANTICIPATED NEW POLITICAL / SELF-CARE BOOK

The Weitzman Hosts Book Release Event for DEMOCRACY IN RETROGRADE by Former Counsel to Sen. Chuck Schumer, Emily Amick, and Co-Founder of Betches Media, Sami Sage

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (June 27, 2024) – On July 9, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will lead a conversation on stage at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History with the authors of DEMOCRACY IN RETROGRADE: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives.

This hotly anticipated new “self-help and political manifesto” comes from authors Emily Amick, an attorney who served as counsel to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and now shares political analysis with her 140k+ Instagram followers, and Sami Sage, co-founder and chief brand officer of Betches Media, which has 9 million+ Instagram followers. Sami has 75k followers and hosts the award-winning daily news podcast, Morning Announcements.

“These three Jewish Americans are some of the most relevant voices in contemporary politics and civic engagement,” said Dan Samuels, the Weitzman Museum’s Director of Public Programs. “While different in scope, the work that they all do inspires people to engage productively in democracy rather than pull back from a political ecosystem that can feel complicated and combative.”

Whip-smart, funny, and optimistic, DEMOCRACY IN RETROGRADE is perfect for anyone who wants to save our democracy but doesn’t know where to start. Emily and Sami provide advice and insight on realistic ways to get the job done:

  • Civic Engagement as Self-care
  • Overcoming Apathy
  • Play Politics Your Way
  • No Dumb Questions
  • You Were Made for This

The book is not just about voting but about claiming your singular place in your country and community, a choose-your-own-adventure map to civic engagement.

Admission to this event includes the speaking program and a signed book by the authors.
