A not-to-miss fusion of Moroccan Jewish heritage and New Orleans jazz and blues.
Neta Elkayam and Amit Hai Cohen are two of the most important artists carrying Moroccan musical traditions forward today. Jews played a prominent role in carrying those traditions before a mass exodus from the country in the 1960’s.
Rooted in Moroccan Jewish heritage and shaped by their upbringing in Netivot, Elkayam and Cohen are known worldwide for creating powerful musical experiences that feel at once ancient, contemporary and futuristic. Their performances honor the voices of their families and the Moroccan elders who taught them, and encourages audiences to expand their understanding of what it means and sounds like to be Jewish.
After two years in New Orleans, the duo of cultural storytellers has developed a new project that delicately weaves their singular approach to Jewish Moroccan music with jazz and blues- the quintessential sounds of their adopted home city. Their upcoming concert at The Weitzman marks the first time this music will be performed in Philadelphia.
Their spring tour launches when they take The Weitzman’s stage with some of New Orleans’ finest musicians: Peter Varnado on Drums, Martin Masakowski on bass, and Chloe White on soprano saxophone. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience a unique fusion of Jewish Moroccan culture and New Orleans heritage.
Proudly produced in partnership with Temple University, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Philadelphia.
