Tribe 12 connects people in their 20s/30s to Jewish life and community in Philadelphia today so they will choose to stay connected tomorrow. We welcome people who identify as Jewish, whose partner is Jewish, or who are exploring Judaism. Telling Our Stories: Leading up to Passover, the ultimate Jewish story-telling experience, we will explore our own family’s histories and stories.
Join Mick Brewer, Tribe 12’s Engagement Manager, and Rebecca Krasner, the Weitzman’s Director of Education, for a cohort-based experience with your peers at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. We will use its award-winning collection as our inspiration for investigating our own Jewish stories and histories. This program explores the use of objects and artifacts as tools of storytelling and meaning making. Together we will learn, laugh, and create.
- Session 1 | Guided tour of Weitzman Museum’s exhibitions and archives
- Session 2 | Lech Lecha – Get Going! Go Toward Yourself: Where have we come from and where are we going? What journey have we been on?
- Session 3 | Higaditah L’Bincha – Telling the Stories of Every Generation: The central theme of the haggadah, Storytelling as a central theme in our Jewish history and culture. What is your Jewish story and that of your family of origin or chosen family?
- Session 4 | Avadim Hayinu – once we were slaves and now we are free. Looking at stories in Jewish history that focus on moments of liberation and redefinition. We will examine the Jewish role in civil rights movements in America. How does our narrative as previously enslaved people inform our values? How can this provide guidance for us today as we shape the stories of tomorrow?
We will meet weekly for 4 sessions at the museum, plus a culminating session during the Freedom Seder Revisited. Dinner will be served at each session. All sessions will be 6:30-8:30 PM unless otherwise noted.
Cost is $36 a person for the series. If cost is prohibitive, scholarships are available – please be in touch with Mick (mick@tribe12.org). All sessions include a vegetarian dinner.
