RABBI FROM SYNAGOGUE HOSTAGE CRISIS TO APPEAR IN PHILADELPHIA
April 27, 2023
Key Artifacts from the 2022 Antisemitic Incident are Currently on Display at The Weitzman
When: Thursday, April 27, 6:30 p.m.
Where: The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History (The Weitzman)
101 S Independence Mall E, Philadelphia (5th and Market Streets)
What: Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, who was taken hostage with three synagogue congregants in Colleyville, Texas last year, will speak at The Weitzman, where two artifacts that are crucial to the story of the hostage crisis are currently on display.
The program, “Faith in the Face of Hate,” brings together two prominent faith leaders: Rabbi Cytron-Walker and Reverend Mark Kelly Tyler, pastor of Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Rabbi Cytron-Walker will share his experience during and since the 2022 hostage crisis, which left a lasting impact on the young Rabbi, and the Jewish community as a whole.
The two faith leaders will also discuss the importance of working to address rising antisemitism and hate in all forms. The conversation will be moderated by Jane Eisner, director of academic affairs at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, an award-winning journalist, and author.
The two artifacts — the teacup that the Rabbi initially offered to the man to welcome him to the synagogue and the chair that the Rabbi ultimately threw at him, which enabled the hostages to escape unharmed — are currently on view at the Weitzman.
This event is produced and presented by the ADL Philadelphia in partnership with The Weitzman.
This is a free event with a $12 suggested donation; Registration is required.
